Trade Marks can consist of "any sign" capable of designating the origin of goods or services provided under the sign.

Unusual signs which can be protected by a trade mark registation are things such as advertising jingles, smells and the shapes of goods or packaging.

Registered trade marks are renewable every 10 years and if renewal fees continue to be paid, the trade mark can remain registered ad infinitum. As with patents, registered trade marks can create enormous commercial value.
